How to know when to stay or leave a relationship?

my bf and I have been going out for over a year now.. but recently i think hes acting weird.. he hardly calls or text me .. I always contact him first.. one time i asked him if he was ever going to break up with me face to face he said no coz he doest not want to break my heart. I'm guessing he hates confrontations. Sometimes I want to tell him its over but I fear that il be so sad since this is my first relationship and it lasted over a year..coz i sometimes feel unhappy and i know i deserve more than what I'm getting. No fights or nothing .. i feel hes bored . we are both 19 years old so more than a year relationship can get boring.. i really dont know what to do a part of me wants to break up with him .. while d other wants to stay.. from the way I see it I think he wants me to break up with him .. not him coz he does not want to make me sad.. and if i tell him we should break up hes not going to beg.. (at least that will tell you he still has feelings for you ) ..WHAT DO I DO??
