Didnt the church change there standpoint or belief on the fact that adam and eve were not real? Around 1992?

I was told by my religion teacher around the year 1992 that the cathloic church changed its standpoint on the fact that adam and eve were real people and that it was really like a metaphor. but I can not find any thing to back that up. Thanks!
