Finding an apartment across the country?

I live in Pennsylvania and I'm doing an internship this summer in San Jose, CA. I'm currently looking for a place to live, but it's rather overwhelming. I'm guessing I should get something furnished, because I'm not lugging anything across the country (probably just going to fly there...). Also, I'd prefer a studio, but is that just being stupid? If so, what's a good way to find a trustworthy roommate? Any suggestions of where to look?
