Is it just me that notices this ?

Why do people where I live make it really obvious when they ask where you work. Its like the first thing out of their mouth. Its like some people can hardly wait to ask. You can read it in their body language. Its like people tally what your doing with your life. Personally I have a job but why are some people like that. Its like they dont care about me or my family its like "where are you working ,or do you go to school? right away. I know it could just be them trying to make everyday conversation but its like they can hardly wait to ask about your profession,.
