I need to buy a used car immediately, for cash, and can only spend about 3,000-4,000-what kind should I get?

What things should I consider? Which make/model might be a good idea? There are dealers of all companies close to me. All I ask is that it's automatic and short/easy to drive. thank you for your help and suggestions! An SUV would be nice since this is Colorado and winters are snowy, but i know i probably can't afford that. also, do you have any bargaining tips for dealing with the salespeople at the dealerships? thank you!
